DEAR SON (II)

 

dear son, I am old and I am young 

but I have never seen the righteous begging bread

for they live in sufficiency and abundance 

they are like the tree planted by the river side 

that bring forth its fruit in due season and people eat from them

these are what I know and I will tell you

no one is worthy to have a perfect life 

but it is an unquantified blessing to be healthy 

a rare blessing money can’t buy 

a distinct state even the wealthy crave for 

speak the truth even if threatened 

your conscience needs peace irrespective 

refrain from docile idiosyncrasies 

you owe people kindness, don’t bargain 

no one knows when his last bell will chime 

pray for the spirit of discernment 

I wish I can bestow it upon you 

because you need genuine friends for growth 

they add fertilizers to your root

spiritually and physically, you need to glow

marry the heart that loves you most 

the heart that craves for your presence healthily 

the one that preaches your love to your children 

the one who steadies you like a crown on her head 

so when she’s angry, she will still radiate kindness

don’t make decisions when you are vexed 

relax and take a walk by the rivers or in the woods 

for nature has a way of soothing our spirits

then we can calmly reflect deeply then make decisions 

a man is most respected from his actions 

I was once foolish, although I am yet not wise

I still crave for wisdom year in year out 

a wise man knows when to bridle his tongue 

wisdom is only given from above 

I will keep praying for it even on my death bed 

dear son, it’s okay to be afraid sometimes 

for through fear, our courage is renewed 

never stray from prayers and supplications 

for only God knows what’s best for you 

just like he blessed me with your mother
