THE HOUSE WITH THE CHIMNEY

 

there it sits on the graceful land 

the house with the chimney 

continuously smoking it’s pipe 

careless of the wind 

weather tossing it’s smoke aimlessly 

carefree as it may be 

the chimney keeps smoking 

but the house door never opens 

the porch has never been walked 

yet still, someone lives in that house 

could it be a ghost or a goblin?

the chimney refuses to tell 

not one sound has ever been heard 

not one dirty linen hung on the clothing line 

not even a sneeze behind the walls to signify 

but the chimney smokes on, minding it’s own business
