FOOLS IN THEIR FOLLY

you blamed the white man for slavery

seeing him as evil and a beast

do you care to know who the real slaver was?

we blacks, we are the real slave master

selling our brothers off due to grudges

ignore neighbor’s cries because of jealousy

a piece of glass was so spectacular

we had to trade a whole generation for a bottle of rum

they played on our nativity, yeah

they weighed our intelligence

lured us with baits and we fell

divided us by sowing seeds of discord

we thought them to be Demi gods

their skin was radiant like the sun

our leaders canonize and worshipped them

throwing their wisdom under the grass

we closed our eyes so tight when we wanted to learn their prayers

discarded our gods and lost our faith

we trampled on our shrines and spat on it

kissed their own God less he be angry

suddenly, heaven became our target

hail Mary and glory be’s became the order of the day

we detest opele and believed the rosary

we stopped propitiating our gods and drank holy water

bitter kola became bitter in our throats

we dropped our guns and despise Ogun

to crown it all up

we began to call Esu satan

just like a drunkard swimming in his own vomit

like a lion crying like a mouse

how painful we lost our true image

the blackness of our skins has long been washed away
