LISTEN TO THE RAIN
The weather suddenly grew dark
7:00am became 12 midnight
Without a warning, without a windy sign
It came down unannounced
If you are indoor, listen to the rain
Drumming down heavily on roofs
More than cats and dogs
People all drenched as their clothes drips
School children shivering as they hurriedly walk
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
Everywhere flooded intensely
Blocked drainages diverting erosions into the streets
Petty traders run for their dear lives
Goods already whisked away by flood
A pregnant lady walking helplessly
A bread hawker's breads in Olympics competitive swimming
A Fulani in kaftan already soaked through and through
Agberos drinking gin in merriment
From where I stand
Cars honk from a distance but no saviour in sight
Motorcycles already abandoned by riders
Who seeked shelter someplace else
And there, an aged couple
Seeks shelter under a perforated roof
An orange seller chasing her oranges
A traffic warder cowers under a kiosk
Damaged umbrellas litters everywhere
And there we all are
Been schooled by mother nature
For the rain came down unannounced
Showing his dexterity over humans
